132 DENTAL HYGIENE I CREDIT HOURS
9 CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION The first in a series of courses designed to integrate didactic
knowledge of dental hygiene with affective behavior and psychomotor skills.
Topics presented include tooth morphology, head, neck and oral anatomy, oral
embryology and histology, general and oral pathology, pharmacology, radiology,
periodontology, pain management, dental materials, oral health education and
preventive counseling, health promotion, patient management, clinical dental
hygiene, provision of services for and management of patients with special
needs, community dental/oral health, medical and dental emergencies including
basic life support, legal and ethical aspects of dental hygiene practice,
infection and hazard control management and the provision of oral health care
services to patients with bloodborne infectious diseases.
Special emphasis is placed on procedures necessary to safely practice
in the clinical setting and the promotion of critical thinking and decision
making by the student through multidisciplinary associations and case studies. PREREQUISITES

135 DENTAL HYGIENE II

COURSE DESCRIPTION The second in a series of courses designed to integrate
didactic knowledge of dental hygiene with affective behavior and psychomotor
skills. Special emphasis is placed on the recognition of conditions requiring
treatment modification evident during medical and dental history review,
radiographic interpretation, and clinical examination. Such conditions include
developmental abnormalities, drug therapies, and existing medical conditions.
Students will explore the role research plays in the dental hygiene
profession.

The fourth in a series of courses designed to integrate didactic
knowledge of dental hygiene with affective behavior and psychomotor skills.
Special emphasis is placed on preparing the student to be a successful
lifelong learner by developing an appreciation for literature review. Students will collaborate with community agencies to plan, develop,
conduct outreach projects.

142 DENTAL HYGIENE APPLICATIONS I

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION The application of dental hygiene theory through the provision of selected dental hygiene services in a supervised setting using a student partner, a laboratory manikin or a client. Determination of appropriate services through accurate decision making will be stressed.
